What is laser epilation?

Laser epilation is a method of removing unwanted hair using laser pulses without damaging the surrounding tissue. Thanks to the lens in the device, the light rays are concentrated into a light beam. When hair follicles absorb a beam of light, they undergo the process of photothermolysis. This process weakens the follicles, preventing them from producing new hair. Over the course of several sessions, the hair in the treated area becomes finer and lighter, and in many cases it stops completely regenerating. The diode laser we use, with a wavelength of 808 nm, is known as the “gold standard of hair removal” because it is suitable for almost all skin types and hair types.

Why can’t the hair be pulled out during the procedure but only shaved?

Laser affects only hairs that are in the active growth phase. After extraction, there is no more melanin with which the machine can remove the hair, and in addition, the time of the procedure increases, as the hair has to grow back in order to be removed. The direction of hair growth can also change, which in turn can cause ingrown hairs and inflammatory processes on the skin. During the course of laser epilation, we ask that hair be removed only by shaving.

When will I get the result, what does it depend on?

Each person is unique, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Usually, to achieve complete hair removal, it is necessary to go through a course consisting of 8-10 sessions, which are recommended to be done about once a month. The growth phase of the hair usually lasts 4-6 weeks, depending on the specific area. The laser beam affects hairs that are in the active growth phase, and at one time about 20% of the hairs in the area are in this phase. Hormonal areas of the body, such as the upper lip and labia, take longer to achive results.

The effectiveness of laser epilation depends on the color and strength of the hair. The darker and stronger the hair and the lighter the skin, the better the results are usually. It is important to note that laser hair removal does not remove hair that is gray or lighter than the skin.

What is the time interval between procedures?

The time between procedures should be 4-6 weeks, depending on the treated area. The exact length and interval of the course will be developed in an individual consultation with a specialist. If performed more often, it is not possible to achieve the desired result earlier, as the laser radiation affects only the hairs that are in the active growth phase. With each procedure, the amount of unwanted hair should decrease. At the end of the course, the intervals of the procedure can be extended if it seems that there is little or no hair. After achieving the desired result, it is recommended to repeat the procedure every six months to maintain the achieved effect.

Does hair growth stop forever?

Hair growth never stops on the human body. However, laser epilation is the longest-lasting hair removal method. The new hairs that may appear are mostly single, fine and light. Hormonal balance in the body greatly affects hair growth, so new hairs can appear after hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause. To maintain the desired result, it is recommended to repeat the procedure every 6 months or a year depending on an individual.

How to prepare for the laser epilation procedure (Is it necessary to shave the hair beforehand, when can i sunbathe…)?

In order for the laser epilation result to be optimal, please follow the following guidelines:

  1. Avoid tanning (2-4 weeks) and use of self-tanning products during the entire course.
  2. Shave the treated area 1-2 days before the procedure to ensure a hair length of 0.5-1 mm. NB! If the area is not carefully shaved, €15 is added!
  3. Wait at least a month after your last waxing or sugaring.
  4. Make sure the skin is clean before the procedure.
  5. If you are using Retionoids and other drugs, consult your family doctor before coming for the procedure.

If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask our specialist for advice.

What to do after the procedure?
  1. Avoid sunbathing (at least 2 weeks) after the procedure and during this time do not use solariums and self-tanners.
  2. Avoid thermal procedures during the first two days, such as saunas and baths.
  3. Use an SPF 30-50 sunscreen regularly.
  4. Do not pluck or depilate the hair throughout the procedure.
  5. Limit the use of decorative cosmetics during the first 24 hours, especially on the face.
  6. Avoid using deodorant on your armpits for the first 24 hours.
  7. If necessary, use Bepanthen or Panthenol cream/gel.

The most common side effects include redness and swelling of the skin. Pigmentation changes, increased sensitivity of the skin to light, blistering and crusting may also occur very rarely.

Laser epilation is based on selective photodermolysis, where a certain target point – melanin is chosen, affecting only it and leaving the surrounding tissues undamaged. This is the hair removal method with the most long-term effect, which must be carried out as a course, since the hair bulb can only be eliminated in the growth phase. Possible side effects of laser hair removal include – some soreness, redness, swelling, skin sensitivity, mild burning, blistering, hyper- or hypo-pigmentation. All these effects are transient and rarely cause complications. If side effects occur, you should definitely contact a specialist and not self-medicate.
